# Start a document-formatting side hustle: one clear report for one consultant

By LaunchMyHustle | 2026-10-16

A consultant may have a finished report whose headings, spacing and page breaks need attention before delivery. A document-formatting service can help with that presentation while leaving the author's words and conclusions intact. This guide walks through a small first offer, a practice job, a quote and a permission-based way to find a customer. The offer and prices are planning examples, not evidence of demand or a promise of paid work.

## Start with a five-page report tidy-up

Choose independent consultants who write short, mostly text-based reports and can supply a finished editable draft. Your first offer could cover one report of up to five supplied pages and 2,000 words, with no more than one simple table and two supplied images. Using both limits prevents a tiny-font document from quietly turning into a much larger job. Agree the scope from the actual file before quoting.

Example offer: "I format a finished short report so headings, lists, spacing and page numbers are consistent. You provide the approved text and any permitted images. I return an editable file in our agreed format and a PDF for review, with one round of formatting corrections."

This suits someone comfortable with careful screen work and checking small differences. It is not simply choosing an attractive font. You need to preserve numbers, emphasis, links and the intended reading order while making the document easier to use.

- Include: a simple heading hierarchy, consistent paragraph and list styles, page numbers, sensible page breaks and one agreed visual style.
- Exclude: writing or rewriting, fact-checking, translation, complex charts, scanned-file conversion, macros, long reports and designing a brand identity.
- Do not accept legal filings, regulated documents or a formal accessibility-remediation assignment as part of this beginner offer.
- Agree a delivery date, the file format and software the client will use, and a deadline for one consolidated formatting-correction list. New text or a changed brief requires a new agreement.

## Choose tools you can test with the customer

You need a reliable computer, a way to exchange files privately, and a word processor you know well. If you already have suitable equipment, you can practice without buying document software: LibreOffice provides free direct downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its app-store versions can carry a charge. LibreOffice also supports PDF export. These facts were checked on October 16, 2026; they do not make the whole business free to run.

Ask which application and file format the customer needs. Do not assume a file will look identical after moving between applications or devices. Test a non-sensitive sample in the agreed workflow before accepting the job. If the client requires a specific paid application you do not have, verify its current commercial-use terms and cost, include that in your budget, or decline the work.

Use fonts and images you have permission to use. A PDF is useful for checking the intended layout, but it does not replace a usable editable file if that is part of the agreement. Keep the original unchanged and make a working copy.

## Budget for the work you actually need

Separate costs you already pay from additional costs caused by taking work. A practice setup using your existing computer, internet connection and a free direct LibreOffice download can have $0 in new software purchase costs. That is a limited statement about software, not a complete startup-cost estimate. If you need a computer, paid software, backup storage or another service, obtain actual prices rather than treating them as zero.

Write down one-time purchases separately from recurring costs, as the U.S. Small Business Administration recommends. Your list might include equipment, internet, software, secure storage, payment processing and appropriate business cover. Allocate shared costs consistently; do not count the same subscription both as a direct job expense and again in overhead.

Check the registration, permit, tax and insurance requirements that apply where you operate before taking paid work. SBA guidance explains that licenses and permits depend on activity and location. The U.S. sources below are starting points, not advice for every country or a claim that remote work is exempt.

## Build one honest practice sample

Write your own short fictional project update with a title, three sections, a bulleted list, a simple table and a link. Deliberately give it inconsistent spacing and headings, then make a clean version. Label both as a practice sample with fictional content. Do not use a former employer's or customer's report without permission, and do not present this exercise as paid experience.

Time the whole exercise, including reading the brief, applying styles, exporting, comparing files and writing a delivery note. A suggested first practice budget is 15 minutes to inspect and agree a style, 50 minutes to format, 25 minutes to check both outputs and 10 minutes to prepare delivery: 100 minutes total. These are trial allocations, not an industry speed standard. Stop and reassess if the sample is beyond your skills.

Compare the before and after versions. Can a reader locate the main sections? Do lists remain lists and numbers remain unchanged? Open the exported PDF separately instead of assuming export succeeded. Repeat the exercise until you can explain what you changed and identify what you still cannot reliably deliver.

## Follow a repeatable formatting and quality check

Agree a small style sheet before changing the real report: page size, margins, body text, heading levels, list spacing and how tables should look. Use built-in heading styles in a logical order rather than making ordinary paragraphs look like headings. Microsoft recommends heading styles, descriptive links, accessible lists and checks for issues such as missing alternative text and low contrast.

Ask the author to supply or approve meaningful descriptions for images. Keep data tables simple and identify headers. Run the accessibility checker available in your software, then review the document yourself. A clean automated check does not establish that every reader can use the result; this offer does not certify accessibility compliance. A customer who needs a formal standard met should use someone qualified for that scope.

- Before: confirm the final source version, word/page limits, permitted assets and which comments or tracked changes the author wants resolved. Never accept or reject substantive changes on their behalf.
- During: apply styles consistently, avoid spacing with repeated blank lines, and check page breaks after changing margins or fonts.
- Compare: check names, numbers, dates, units, wording, emphasis and links against the approved original. Flag suspected mistakes instead of silently rewriting them.
- Export: inspect every PDF page for cut-off text, stranded headings, missing characters and table breaks. Reopen the editable output in the agreed application or have the customer verify compatibility.
- Deliver: provide the agreed files, a short list of formatting changes and any unresolved questions. Ask the author to approve the content and confirm that both files open before calling the job complete.

## Quote the entire job, including corrections

Estimate all working time: messages, file inspection, formatting, quality checks, delivery and the included correction round. Multiply those hours by a labor amount you choose for planning, then add direct costs and a reasonable allocation of business overhead. Compare that total with the scope and alternatives available to your prospective customer. A spreadsheet or written calculation is enough for a first estimate.

Illustrative US-dollar example: 20 minutes for messages and file inspection, 60 minutes for formatting, 25 minutes for checks and delivery, and 15 minutes reserved for one correction round total 120 minutes, or two hours. At an assumed $25 per working hour, the labor allowance is $50. Add an assumed $5 allocation for business costs and $0 direct expenses to get a sample quote of $55 before any applicable tax. All inputs are hypothetical; this is not a market rate, take-home pay or guaranteed profit.

Replace each input with your own estimate and include applicable fees without counting them twice. If the file needs more time, quote a smaller scope or a different total before starting. Do not charge for unexpected extra work without agreement. Confirm the price, payment timing, delivery date and what happens if the client changes the text or cancels.

Record actual time after delivery. If the assumed two-hour job takes three hours, the $55 has to cover those three hours and the same costs. That is a reason to improve your next estimate, not evidence that the customer owes an unagreed surcharge.

## Keep client documents private

For this first offer, choose non-sensitive material the consultant is authorized to share. Ask for a redacted sample when assessing the job. Decline files containing sensitive personal, medical, financial or confidential third-party information until you have the appropriate skills, tools and agreement to handle them. Do not ask for passwords or enable macros from an unfamiliar file.

Agree the transfer method, who may access the files, and when working copies will be removed. Keep your device updated and restrict sharing to the intended recipient. Do not upload client files to public converters, AI services or portfolio sites without specific permission and an appropriate agreement. Remove your own comments and unintended document properties from the deliverable, while preserving anything the client requires.

Permission to format a report is not permission to publish a before-and-after sample. Ask separately for permission to share specific material in a named place. If permission is absent, use your fictional practice sample. Keep only what your agreement and applicable obligations require; do not promise deletion from systems or backups you cannot control.

## Make one small first-customer attempt

Start with an audience you can reach respectfully: independent consultants in a professional community you already participate in, or someone willing to make an introduction. Treat the idea that they want this help as a hypothesis. A practice sample demonstrates your approach; it does not prove demand.

A message you can adapt: "I am testing a small report-formatting service for independent consultants. It covers a finished report up to five pages and 2,000 words: consistent headings, lists, spacing and page numbers, plus editable and PDF copies. I have a fictional practice sample if you would like to see the style. Is this a task you handle yourself or sometimes want help with?"

If someone is interested, ask about their current workflow, the file format, the deadline and what formatting problems cost them time. Offer a scoped quote after checking a suitable redacted sample. Do not treat a positive reply as a booking or promise a deadline before seeing the file.

- Prepare the labeled fictional sample and a short offer with inclusions, exclusions and a way to ask about availability.
- Ask a contact for a permission-based introduction, or choose one community that permits service offers and follow its rules. Do not scrape contact lists or mass-message members.
- Make one relevant inquiry and listen. If the person does not want help, stop. Follow up only where welcome; do not invent urgency or testimonials.
- Track conversations, requested quotes, agreed bookings and completed paid jobs separately. A compliment or sample view is not revenue.
- After a completed job, ask whether the files were usable and what was missing. Compare actual time with your estimate before making the next offer.

## Decide whether document formatting fits you

This is worth testing if you like structured, detail-focused work, can protect another person's words and files, and are willing to check the output carefully. If you prefer physical work or dislike repeated layout checks, choose another service instead. One job cannot establish steady demand or a monthly income.
